  Bad Compilation Tapes/Borderless Countries Tapes è un'etichetta indipendente di musica hardcore punk fondata nel 1981 da Chris Chacon e da Dave W. a San Diego, California. L'etichetta, con una dichiarata etica DIY pubblicò, dal 1981 al 1987, 27 compilazioni su cassette contenenti 149 gruppi provenienti da 17 paesi di tutto il mondo ed è considerata una delle etichette che maggiormente contribuirono alla diffusione dell'hardcore punk europeo in Nord America [1]. Storia della BCT

1981-1986: la Bad Compilation Tape

Nel 1981 la BCT pubblicò un annuncio sul numero 8 di «Maximumrocknroll» chiedendo ai gruppi di spedire le loro composizioni. L'annuncio fu poi rimbalzato da diverse riviste europee, tra cui la rivista italiana «Rockerilla» e le fanzine «T.V.O.R.» («Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte») ed «Attack punkzine», che contribuirono molto all'internazionalizzazione dell'etichetta. Nacquero così le prime due compilazioni della BCT. La prima dal titolo First Strike, che vedeva band provenienti dagli USA come Clitboys, Future Ruins, Violation, Vatican Commandos, Mr. Epp & The Calculations [3] (band di Mark Arm e Steve Turner, che poi diventerà i Green River [4]) e gli Eat The Rich, e la seconda dal titolo Music On Fire,  che vedeva band della scena italiana come 5° Braccio, Raw Power, Indigesti, Wretched, Stazione Suicida, Crash Box e Rappresaglia [5]. Le copertine erano poi marchiate con il logo della BCT, che era un personaggio chiamato Moe Hawk, disegnato in bianco e nero da Dan, il cantante degli Eat the Rich di San Jose.

A queste seguirono molte pubblicazioni di band da tutto il mondo: i finlandesi Rattus e Terveet Kädet, i danesi Razor Blades e Disrespect, gli svedesi Mob 47, Product Assar, Moderat Likvidatio ed Anti Cimex, i tedeschi Äni(X)Väx e Kanalkotzer, gli australiani Vicious Circle o i canadesi Bill Of Rights, furono solo alcuni dei tantissimi nomi che popolavano allora le pubblicazioni internazionali della BCT.

Tra il 1986 ed il 1987 le pubblicazioni si estesero anche ad altri formati sotto la denominazione di BC Tapes & Records, la cui prima pubblicazione fu una compilazione su LP dal titolo We Can Do Whatever We Want (International Comp.) che vedeva una successione di band europee e statunitensi.

Anni 2000: ristampe e nuove pubblicazioni

Nei primi anni 2000 l'etichetta statunitense ristampa molto del vecchio materiale su CD ed LP. Tra queste ristampe vi fu Senza Tregua: Graducato Hardcore (2002), che per la nuova edizione affidò la copertina dell'album a Winston Smith, lo storico autore del logo e delle copertine dei Dead Kennedys.

La BCT e l'Italia

Nel 1984 Chris Chacon riconfermò l'interesse per la scena italiana stampando prima un album interamente dedicato ai Raw Power dal titolo Studio + Live, poi le due cassette Last White Christmas, registrazioni del concerto che radunò tutte le band del Granducato Hardcore; nello stesso anno alcune fanzine italiane cominciarono a chiamare l'etichetta Borderless Countries Tapes, che decise di aggiungerlo al nome originale.

La BCT ed i tour delle band italiane negli USA

Chris Chacon, in seguito alla stampa dei Raw Power organizzò il tour della band, che fu anche il primo tour di una band hardcore punk della scena italiana negli States. Durante il tour, 24 spettacoli in 40 giorni, i Raw Power suonarono al «Grand Olympic Auditorium» di Los Angeles con i Dead Kennedys davanti a più di 5.000 persone. Fu in quei giorni che l'etichetta indipendente Toxic Shock Records di Pomona (California) si fece avanti per la pubblicazione del secondo album, Screams From The Gutter, che venne registrato ad Indianapolis verso la fine del tour, nello studio di Paul Mahern degli Zero Boys, in un giorno e mezzo soltanto. Il disco uscì nel 1985 e vendette più di 40.000 copie tramite canali indipendenti. Nello stesso periodo la BCT pubblicò Live in the USA, una cassetta con tutti i migliori brani registrati in tour (15 nastri di 24 concerti).

Nel romanzo autobiografico di Silvio Bernelli dal titolo I ragazzi del Mucchio, il bassista dei Declino, dei Negazione e degli Indigesti descrive il tour di questi ultimi negli States organizzato e promosso dalla BCT nel 1986. L'etichetta, per l'occasione, produsse anche l'EP su 7" The Sand Through the Green. Il tour, che durò 40 giorni con 23 concerti, partì da Filadelfia e finì a San Francisco, suonando anche a St. George (Utah) con dei giovanissimi NOFX, che allora avevano appena pubblicato il loro secondo disco.
